What happened to Darrell Waltrip? ›

Waltrip announced his retirement from broadcasting on April 4, 2019, at Bristol Motor Speedway citing his desire to spend more time with his wife and grandchildren. His final race in the broadcast booth was the 2019 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. He has also announced the 2022 Food City Dirt Race.

He has been married to Stevie Waltrip since August 15, 1969. They have two children.

Michael Curtis Waltrip (born April 30, 1963) is an American former professional stock car racing driver, racing commentator, racing team owner, amateur ballroom dancing competitor and published author. He is the younger brother of three-time NASCAR champion and racing commentator Darrell Waltrip.

After nearly 50 years of racing and broadcasting, he retired to spend more time with his family. But retirement isn't all Waltrip thought it would be. He readily admits he misses the action that racing and being at race tracks brings.

He's also known for his appearances on “Dancing with the Stars,” his book, “In the Blink of an Eye,” and his work at Fox Sports as an analyst for the network's NASCAR coverage. His last race was in 2017 and he's been working as an analyst full time since, though that didn't stop him from pursuing other ventures.
