Can you still drive through the giant redwood tree? ›

Only on the Northern California coast

EUREKA, Calif. -- Not one but three giant redwoods offer motorists the opportunity to steer their wheels through a living tree. All are right off US Highway 101, known as the Redwood Highway, within an hour or so drive of the historic seaport of Eureka.

Coast redwoods also have a limited natural range and are found alongside the Pacific Coast in northern California and southern Oregon. Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world and grow cloaked in fog that rolls through their canopies as warm air masses are cooled by the Pacific Ocean.

Oregon Redwoods Trail: Hike Through the Majestic Forest

One of the most popular trails in the region, this trail offers a short hike (1.6 miles) which loops back to the beginning through a mixed-species of redwoods.

Currently, the range of the giant sequoia is limited to the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The coast redwood's range is just along the central/northern California coast and the southwest Oregon coast.

There are no entrance fees to drive the scenic roads or highways in our three state parks and national park. Some day-use areas have fees; these accept interagency and CA state park passes.

Of two well-known tree tunnels in Central California, the one in Tuolumne Grove is through a dead tree, and the Wawona Tree in Yosemite fell over in 1969. On California's Redwood Coast, however, there are three drive-through redwoods still going strong, all of them operated as tourist attractions.

While you could easily spend multiple days in the Redwoods, you can also get a good feel for all the Redwoods have to offer in one adventure-filled day!

Walking through a redwood grove on a fog-shrouded morning can be an unforgettable experience.

Roughly 50 miles long, the parklands stretch from Crescent City, CA (near the Oregon border) in the north to the Redwood Creek watershed south of Orick, CA. Five information centers are located along this north-south corridor. Park Headquarters is located at 1111 Second Street, Crescent City, CA 95531.

If you are closer to the northern coast of California, choose the Redwood Forest, as this will be more in the way of your chosen route. However, if you are on the southwest coast and heading east, go for Sequoia.

Q: Can you drive through Sequoia National Park? Visitors can drive through Sequoia into Kings Canyon National Parks along the Generals Highway during the spring into the fall. Winter snows may cause the road between the parks to be closed in winter. However, both parks are open year round.
